Craniotomy performed with the use of a microscope is referred to as microsurgical craniotomy. The microscopes used by neurosurgeons today allow for exceptional visualization of the brain lesion and surrounding tissues and vital structures. The term craniotomy means a cut that opens the cranium. When Dr. Bovis performs a craniotomy, he is removing a section of the skull, called a bone flap, to access the brain. The bone flap is then replaced after the procedure.

Craniotomies are performed by Dr. Bovis to resect or remove brain tumors, to decompress nerves causing facial pain or spasms, and clip aneurysms or remove AVMs. He performs these procedures at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and Alexian Brothers Medical Center. In many cases, advanced intraoperative imaging and navigation technology is utilized to make the surgery safer.

Dr. Bovis performs hundreds of craniotomies for various conditions each year. He has been in neurosurgical practice in the northwest suburbs of Chicago since 2000, and has a tremendous amount of experience in performing craniotomies.
